We condemn Youngkin’s decision to deploy National Guard troops in response to today’s No Kings protests in Virginia.The use of military force to silence dissent is a shameful tactic—one that echoes the Trump administration’s response to protests in Los Angeles this past week. National civil rights leaders were right to say that “the right to protest the Trump administration’s unjust policies targeting Black and Brown communities must be protected.”
We stand in agreement with those organizations—including the NAACP, National Urban League, National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, National Action Network, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Leadership Conference, National Council of Negro Women, and Legal Defense Fund—and we say clearly:
The right to protest is not a threat. It’s a cornerstone of democracy.
