“HANOVER HERITAGE DAY” BRINGS HISTORY ALIVE

The government complex at historic Hanover Courthouse will be filled with exhibitors and vendors for the fourth annual “Hanover Heritage Day: Celebrating our History” event on Saturday, May 20.

More than 45 exhibitors and vendors are signed up for the event, which will be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There also will be music throughout the day, numerous hands-on children’s activities and plenty of delicious food as well as the ever-popular oxen rides across the green fields at Hanover Courthouse.

Admission is free and all are invited to attend. The official Opening Ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m.

The setting could hardly be more appropriate for such a historic event. Hanover Courthouse, around which the village was formed, is one of the oldest in Virginia, having been built around 1735. Patrick Henry practiced law in the Courthouse and gained his first fame in the “Parson’s Cause” argument in 1763, which will be re-enacted several times on “Heritage Day.”

Across U.S. 301 from old Hanover Courthouse is Hanover Tavern, which has recently been renovated. Hanover Tavern will be open for self-guided tours on “Heritage Day” and will have activities for children on the newly-restored stage of the Barksdale Theatre.
