BEAVERDAM ELEMENTARY NAMED BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL

(Sept. 27, 2005)

Beaverdam Elementary was one of seven public schools in Virginia to be recognized last week as a 2005 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Blue Ribbon School.

It’s the second time Beaverdam Elementary has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Beaverdam Elementary won its first blue ribbon in 1996-97. The recognition is granted to schools that have achieved specific results on statewide student assessments.

Jay Moyer, representing the U.S. Department of Education, made the announcement at the school on September 22. School Board Chairman Sue Watson, Beaverdam School Board representative John Axselle, Superintendent of Schools Stewart Roberson, instructional leadership staff members, and Mr. Lan Neugent, Assistant Superintendent of Technology from the Virginia Department of Education joined Principal Michael Mudd and Beaverdam staff members, students, and parents, to celebrate this special honor.

Cool Spring Elementary was recognized as a NCLB Blue Ribbon School in 2003. The following Hanover schools have won National Blue Ribbon School recognition from the U.S. Department of Education since 1996:

· Liberty Middle School (1996)

· Beaverdam Elementary School (1997)

· Stonewall Jackson Middle School (1998)

· Cold Harbor Elementary School (1999)

· Chickahominy Middle School (2000)
